Saudi Arabia announces a solar power plant that will save up to $ 240 million

King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia, announced last week the signing of two memorandums of understanding to establishment the first independent solar power station in the Kingdom with a 50 megawatts capacity 320 km from the capital, Riyadh. 

According to the media representative of the city who stated that a two memorandums of understanding were signed by the city with the Saudi Electricity Company and Teqnya Energy company to establish a joint center for research and development in the Saudi Electricity company's distribution sector, and the creation of the first solar power plant in Saudi Arabia.

It is expected that the project will help saving more than 4 million barrels of high diesel fuel cost per year, saving the state over $ 240 million, as well as to reducing the harmful and toxic gas emissions, equivalent to 1.7 million tons of carbon oxides carbon. 

The aim of the memorandum is to create a solar station between the city and the two companies, to take advantage of science and research, and industries related to renewable energy, and to build a sustainable future through a variety of sources of energy, and the provision of alternative and safe sources of energy, that would save fuel, in order to serve the overall economy of the Kingdom.

The city will work to secure the project and to provide the solar panels, and provide technical assistance for Teqnya Energy Company during the operation and maintenance of the plant throughout the duration of the project, which will take 25 years. 

Teqnya will design, construct, operate and maintain the station, in cooperation with the Saudi Electricity Company, which will purchase the produced electricity, at a price which will be one of the cheapest in the world starting from 18.70 halalas per kilowatt / hour, and provide enough electricity to cover the Aflaj province.

The King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology also signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of research and development in the distribution sector with the Saudi Electricity Company, and this agreement comes within the framework of research cooperation and continuous technical maintenance between the city and the Saudi Electricity Company, to establish a joint center for research relationship with the electricity company with respect to the distribution sector, that enhances the localization of advanced technology and opens up economic opportunities in addition to the training of national competencies, Joint research and projects at hand and will focus on several research paths in the distribution sector, including: electrical power quality, protection systems in distribution networks, renewable energy and as well as vocational training, engineering and development in the distribution, the center headquarters of center is expected to be in the Water and Energy Research Institute in the city.
